Cavena, Screen and OOONA sign triparty agreement

Subtitling technology power houses OOONA, Screen and Cavena have partnered to revolutionise online subtitle creation software.

Screen and Cavena who contribute already to the innovative OOONA online Subtitling Toolkit joined forces in a collaboration forged and announced at NAB to bring what they have labelled as a ‘Semi-pro’ application to the already globally used Online Toolkit.

OOONA who launched the portal set out to offer simple but effective online applications which require no setup and are quick and simple to learn how to use.

Managing Director of OOONA, Wayne Garb said: ‘We envisaged a space on the internet where translators and subtitlers could easily access suitable tools to quickly and effectively create and prepare subtitles anywhere with internet access, and without having to download any software.’

He added: ‘What also makes this offering unique as far as we are aware, is that we don’t believe in back engineering, so our files are the genuine article from the original vendors like Screen, Cavena and EZTitles; this means customers are very unlikely to encounter problems with their resultant files.’

With a good number of users so far signed up and already using the Online Subtitling Toolkit and many academic institutions adopting it, Garb expressed a market need for an online subtitling application which was positioned between the tools it already made available and premium professional software.

To achieve this cost-effectively and with the best possible results OOONA called upon partners Screen and Cavena to consider the possibility of working together to deliver its semi-professional offering.

Screen’s Business Development Director, Keith Lucas said: ‘Broadcast IT is developing at an incredible rate and Screen believes there is an urgent requirement for this online product.’

‘Screen is delighted to be working with other industry innovators like OOONA and Cavena to create this application which I truly trust will be rapidly adopted by the subtitling fraternity.’

Henrik Moberg, Managing Director of Cavena adds: ‘Cavena is honoured to be part of this team and development, which we believe will be of benefit for all translators and especially if you are starting to work in this interesting and growing business.’

The price for the semi-professional application is still to be set but assurances have been made by the collaboration that the software will be appropriately affordable.

A delivery date will be announced shortly.

End of Life statement – TDG7/SDO7 Teletext Inserter Units

SysMedia’s TDG7 & SDO7 Teletext Inserters were introduced in 2005, built to last using industrial grade hardware, however, these units are now increasingly difficult to maintain and repair due to non-availability of spare parts.

The product line must now be considered End of Life.

As we do have very limited stocks available, TDG7 and SDO7 units will not be removed immediately from existing support contracts but will be removed from support at the next annual renewal.

In the interim period, we will offer telephone support and advice on using the product as part of a supported Plasma teletext production system, but we are now unable to provide a guaranteed repair service – we will of course use our best endeavours.

Customers may like to consider replacement of TDG/SDO units with the equivalent latest Polistream U8000 hardware systems, which can be offered at a discounted price for this purpose. Pricing would depend on the particular TDG/SDO configuration so please contact us with details for more information or visit http://subtitling.com/products/subtitle-delivery/transmit/plasma-teletext-transmission-system/

For more information on this EOL statement, on PLASMA or for a quotation to replace your current TDG7 or SDO7 system please contact Email Simon Kane

End of sale statement – Polistream Blue

Screen’s Polistream Blue systems were introduced in 2002 and have been in continual service since.

The units were designed and built to last using industrial-grade hardware and in some instances we are having difficulties with replacement parts and or cards that fit the following:

·         P5000 ·         P4000 ·         T3000
·         G3000 and G3500 ·         A1000 Series ·         A4000 Series
·         G5000 ·         D series ·         R Series

The Blue range was designed to work with each unit having a specific function and these have now been superseded by the Polistream Black range – initially by our generic multi-purpose platform the U4000 units (XP and XPE) and more recently by the U8000 units (Windows 2012).

The Blue product line must now be considered End of Sale and no further quotations or sales will be made from March 1st 2017

Support

Customers with any of the above units will continue to be supported and all Screen PoliWise support contract blue equipment will be honoured.

Limited replacement stock is available and if it is still possible (before the year-end) in some instances to expand an existing Blue system.

Upgrading Options

Screen recommends upgrading all Blue systems to the new U8000 high density hardware together with a full operating system upgrade to Windows 2012.

To achieve this, please contact me directly and I will arrange for a sales or support engineer to analyse your current Blue database and to redesign the system using our latest hardware and software modules.

All like for like software such as language encoders (BLE) and control/configuration software (CMM) will be swapped over to the Black new system at no additional charge.

The same applies to any monitoring options such as MSX.

Please note:

It is NOT possible to mix Polistream Blue and Black systems due to the operating software and any quotations for a system upgrade will be for a full system replacement, including redundancy.

For more information on this end of sale statement, on the U8000 or for a quotation to replace your current system please contact me via email: email Simon Kane

Advanced Online Subtitle Creation Tool launches at BVE

$

The online subtitling tool resulting from the triparty partnership revealed at NAB 2016 between OOONA, Screen and Cavena will be formally launched at BVE it has been announced.

The collaboration of subtitle technologists who have already contributed to the broader OOONA online toolkit agreed to pool resources back in April last year to develop a browser based, advanced subtitle creation and preparation tool.

Online Toolkit’s concept was the brainchild of Wayne Garb, Managing Director of OOONA whose vision was to create an online portal where subtitlers and translators have easy access to a suite of tools with a suitably high level of functionality. The core objective was to create a toolkit to enable professionals to quickly create and prepare subtitle files via internet access and without the need to download software.

To ensure an appealing balance of effective tools and consequently avoid weighing down the application with surplus functionality the project team consulted professional subtitlers and translators at every stage of the development.

The result is a system which is simple to learn how to use with no set up time and offers features that users really require.

The new create tool, as with the entire toolkit, will be an evolving application but some suggested features have been highlighted.

Most notable is the flexibility of the user interface.

Most subtitlers and translators have a preferred way of working regarding where the onscreen elements of their subtitle creation software GUI is concerned. This also often changes depending on the task they’re performing.

Drag-and-drop is at the heart of the GUI enabling the user to place any element of the working screen where they want. They can subsequently save the self-defined work screens as defaults for rapid access.

Multi-skilled professionals are able to save user interfaces according to the task in hand so for instance a profile for carrying out QA functions and another for timing or translation.

Another preference led feature is that of hotkeys. Again, with subtitling software it is a crucial component to speeding up the overall process and making a time crucial job much more efficient.

The new online Subtitling Tool along with the entire subtitling toolkit will be demonstrated at BVE on Screen’s and Cavena’s stands which can be located at N25 and J14 respectively where interested attendees can experience the new tool in its entirety.

Subtitle Virus Risk Should be put into Perspective

$

As the connected world expands, apprehension over malicious software finding its way on to commonplace devices increases too; and justifiably so.

Hacking methods vary with the perpetrators forever on the search for clandestine means of infiltrating technology.

Recent reports hitting the social media networks over the past couple of days have highlighted that the latest medium of choice for hackers is the humble and seemingly innocuous subtitle file.

With the volume of content viewed on connected devices being at the level it is right now, especially on IT with high data sensitivity, some headlines of covering news may be, let’s say bordering on sensationalising this latest exposé.

We wouldn’t want to be accused of playing down the risk however, but feel that it should at least be put into some perspective.

It is evident from the original description of the threat that this particular exploitation focusses on user loaded subtitles and a limited set of non-commercial video players.

We are cautious of using the term ‘legitimate’ in fear of being accusatory but it’s important to note that services such as the likes of Netflix and the BBC iPlayer do not appear to be affected by this threat. The greatest risk lies with users who are viewing video on certain player applications to watch downloaded or streamed video with subsequent fan generated subtitles (Fansubs), possibly unofficial subtitles viewed over unauthorised or possibly even pirated video content.

Perhaps this latest hacking activity strengthens the argument against piracy; as being one of the added values of paying for video?

Screen Appoints new Head of Research

Screen Subtitling Systems has announced the appointment of Colin France as Head of Research.

France, who previously led the Grass Valley development team responsible for the maintenance and support of Publitronic Software has joined the team at Screen to explore new markets, help extend the product portfolio and consequent reach of the company.

France explains that prior to the Miranda acquisition, his time at Omnibus as a developer on their automation software focussed primarily on third party integration. He adds: ‘At one time or another I have worked with almost all of the big players in the industry.’

The development of Omnibus’ ITX, later to be a Grass Valley solution, and its subsequent influence on the penetration of parallel markets led to France’s focus in the company being concentrated on bespoke development. This led to yet further integration projects with third party companies.

On France’s appointment, Screen’s MD Gary Glover commented: ‘It’s the right time for Screen to further expand its vision.’

‘Colin brings with him 16 years of knowledge from within the broadcast industry and indispensable experience of working with many other companies in this space; I’m confident he’ll be a significant contributor to shaping a positive and exciting future for Screen and our customers.’
