Live Subtitling Solution for Online Viewers

First to market offering of live subtitle stream for viewers of web content to enable Broadcasters the ability to extend the access services beyond traditional transmission onto web based platforms and players.

Using the new system, subtitle images are generated in real-time and made available on the web server, along with timing information injected into the stream. A simple javascript module in the player then renders the bitmap images at the correct time on the browser display.

Ofcom, the UK broadcast and communications regulator, has just published its third report into the quality of live subtitles accompanying TV programmes in the UK, writes Andrew Lambourne – Business Development Director for Screen Subtitling Systems.

Working with five main channels including the BBC and ITV, Ofcom has requested feedback on quality and is suggesting moves which could improve subtitle timing and accuracy. After the fourth report later this year the possibility exists that regulation may be changed to underpin changes in order to benefit viewers. The process is in response to continuing complaints from viewers that live subtitles are late, sometimes too fast to read and more error-prone than they would like.

With subtitles often displayed on TVs in gyms, pubs and waiting rooms it is frequently remarked upon by those unfamiliar with the techniques involved, that there are surprising and sometimes amusing errors. Newspapers and websites regularly feature the “best of the worst”, implying that those involved in the production of live subtitles are careless, sloppy or incompetent. Given that this is an incredibly tough job, a manifest lack of awareness of the challenge and difficulty involved in creating an accurate real-time transcript of spoken text and 180+ words per minute with minimal delay explains but does not necessarily excuse such comments….

Screen Subtitling Systems has announced that translation solutions provider OOONA will be demonstrating their web-based subtitling toolkit on the Screen stand at IBC 2015.

OOONA, who develop professional management and production tools for the subtitling industry, has launched a suite of online applications for subtitle creation, review, and QC and file conversion.

Screen Subtitling Systems has announced that they have released their world-renowned subtitle transmission system Polistream as Virtual Machine, Bring-Your-Own-Device and OPEX Rental options to better meet market demand.

Screen’s Polistream Black system has remained a mainstay solution in broadcast as a premium subtitle delivery system since its launch. Revolutionising the company’s popular Blue system, Black employs an energy efficient universal 1U unit and an array of software modules and internal cards to satisfy the customer’s requirements.

Gary Glover, Screen’s Acting MD said: “Polistream is still considered to be a superior product in the market in terms of quality of output, its reliability and the flexibility it offers but we have had to consider the way the solution is supplied to accommodate the radically changing ways our customers now operate.”

Following a period of customer consultation Screen expressed they had learned that the presence of additional hardware on-site, in this case in the shape of their 1U Polistream unit was becoming a sticking point with some customers.

“We’ve had no doubt for years this was going to be the case at some point, but we wanted the time to be right to release the extended options.”: said Glover.

Both Screen’s new Virtual Machine and Bring-Your-Own-Device options, the latter allowing customers to run Polistream on their own server, offer a solution to IP based systems for DVB playout, transcoding and retiming of subtitles.

Glover added: “Besides the VM and BYOD options we’ve responded to customers who have expressed a desire to use Polistream for increasing numbers of shorter-term projects but found the capital expenditure outlay to be an obstacle.”

“In response to that, we’re delighted to now offer an option to rent a full system from us.”
